Charrer\u00eda<\/em> is the national sport of Mexico \u2014 and a family tradition for Sonoma winemakers Juan and Miriam Puentes. Loosely translated as \u201chorsemanship,\u201d charrer\u00eda predates the American rodeo and traces its roots to the 1600s, when Spanish conquistadors introduced horses, cattle, and ranching culture to Mexico.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese were tricks and other things that they would use to handle cattle back in the haciendas,\u201d Juan says of skills like roping, horse handling, and riding bareback on a wild mare. \u201cThey would say, \u2018Oh, I bet you my guys are better than your guys.\u2019 Friendly fun turned into a sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Puenteses\u2019 award-winning charrer\u00eda team<\/a>, Charros de Honrama, includes not only Juan, 45, but also his son Andres, 16, and his daughter Paula, 12. Together they\u2019ve won numerous competitions at the state and national levels, as well as in Mexico.<\/p>\n

The Puentes family also runs Honrama Cellars in Sonoma, their wine labels adorned with charrer\u00eda iconography. \u201cIn our culture, wine is not a common beverage,\u201d Juan says. \u201cIt\u2019s a very unique brand.\u201d The winery will host a Dia del Charro celebration on Sept. 13. honramacellars.com<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

A busy schedule<\/h4>\n

We practice Tuesdays and Thursdays and ride every weekend. We\u2019ll ride everything from little rodeos to massive events, and we take every competition just as seriously. We travel with two horse trailers, about 16 horses. This year we\u2019ll go to Colorado, Texas, Arizona, L.A., San Diego, Las Vegas. We got invited to a competition in Washington. Every weekend we\u2019re booked.<\/p>\n

Dressing the part<\/h4>\n

I\u2019m very proud when I dress the part. All of our gear has to be traditionally made. We can\u2019t wear an American buckle, we can\u2019t wear an American belt. I can\u2019t wear Wranglers underneath my chaps. It has to be a charro pant. We have people make all of our clothes, the chaps, the saddles. And then the coolest part is the guy who makes the hats.<\/p>\n

Los caballos<\/h4>\n

Part of the success our team has had is because of our four-legged friends. You can have the best charros, but if you don\u2019t have them on good horses, they\u2019re not gonna do anything. We have a very special horse named Chucho. He\u2019s famous in the charrer\u00eda world. It\u2019s just one of those horses that is born one in a million. He\u2019s a Seabiscuit, a Secretariat.<\/p>\n

A successful pairing<\/h4>\n

If it wasn\u2019t for charrer\u00eda, we wouldn\u2019t be as successful as we are in winemaking. Charrer\u00eda is our hobby, but after riding that weekend, we come back on Monday in a good mood. My wife runs the tasting room, and I\u2019m in charge of winemaking and production. They\u2019re very similar passions. Being able to make wine with amazing grapes, it\u2019s fun.
