{"id":125879,"date":"2025-06-05T16:57:19","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T23:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sonomamag.com\/?p=125879"},"modified":"2025-06-10T08:35:23","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T15:35:23","slug":"cloverdales-historic-picks-drive-in-gets-new-owner-and-makeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonomamag.com\/cloverdales-historic-picks-drive-in-gets-new-owner-and-makeover\/","title":{"rendered":"Cloverdale&#8217;s Historic Pick&#8217;s Drive-In Gets New Owner and Makeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/news\/sonoma-mattson-mystery-buyer-weebly\/\">Anidel Hospitality<\/a> \u2014 the company that recently acquired the Sonoma Cheese Factory and Sonoma\u2019s Best Modern Mercantile from embattled developer Ken Mattson \u2014 has announced plans to take over a beloved piece of Cloverdale history.<\/p>\n<p>Pick\u2019s Drive-In, a nearly century-old hamburger stand, will become Pick\u2019s Roadside later this summer, according to Amber Lanier, a Cloverdale resident working with Anidel to renovate the iconic eatery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pick&#8217;s has always been more than just a restaurant,&#8221; said Lanier. &#8220;It&#8217;s a gathering spot, a piece of history and a place that has shaped the memories of so many in Cloverdale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A fifth-generation Cloverdale resident, Lanier told The Press Democrat that her grandmother used to go to the drive-in as a little girl in 1923, when it opened as Reed and Bell\u2019s Root Beer Stand \u2014 an offshoot restaurant chain of the A&amp;W Root Beer franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/news\/photos-do-you-remember-these-drive-in-staples\/\">founded by Lewis Reed and H.C. Bell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Pick&#8217;s Drive-In has seen several changes in ownership. Claudia Clow purchased the iconic drive-in in June of 1990 and operated it for nearly three decades. In 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonomamag.com\/new-owners-for-cloverdales-historic-picks-drive-in-2\/\">she sold the business to David Alioto<\/a>, owner of Healdsburger restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alioto, the sale was \u201ca very friendly transaction.\u201d At the time, he expressed a commitment to preserving \u201cthe charm of the 1923 restaurant,\u201d including its secret red relish recipe, while incorporating Healdsburger\u2019s menu and quality standards. (Although Clow sold the business in 2016, she said in a June 9 email to The Press Democrat that she retained ownership of the property and leased it to the new operators.)<\/p>\n<p>In August 2021, Alioto sold Pick\u2019s to Mark and Angela Garcia. Their daughter, Nicole Hinchliffe \u2014 a U.S. Air Force veteran and former employee of the renowned SingleThread restaurant \u2014 stepped into the kitchen and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/lifestyle\/former-singlethread-worker-turns-to-pot-pies-to-save-historic-cloverdale-dr\/\">introduced handmade potpies<\/a> as a way to help sustain operations during the slower winter months.<\/p>\n<p>By August 2024, Hinchliffe announced on Facebook that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/industrynews\/picks-drive-in-cloverdale\/\">Pick\u2019s Drive-In was up for sale<\/a>. She noted the restaurant would remain open until the family found a suitable new owner.<\/p>\n<p>According to Amber Lanier, Anidel Hospitality \u2014 led by San Francisco-based software developer and venture capitalist Chris Fanini, founder of Weebly \u2014 plans to preserve the restaurant\u2019s vintage charm while introducing thoughtful, modern updates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re putting a lot of love and care into the space and making sure that the heart and soul of\u00a0Pick&#8217;s remains at the core of everything we do,&#8221; Lanier said.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a developing
